The inconvenient truth about the late Abdirisak Haji Hussein and why Somali politicians ignore it

The previous week i had learned about the unfortunate passing of Mr. Abdirisak H. Hussein. It might not be expected of many of the genuinely westernized Somali youth in the diaspora to know who this man was. However i believe it is imperative for young Somalis that profess love for their homeland to know the political life of Mr. Hussein.

Abdirisak H. Hussein was born in Galkayo, Somalia 1924. Southern and central Somalia at that time was called "Italian Somaliland" and was under similar colonial subjugation as the British occupied "British Somaliland" which in turn was bordering "French Somaliland", what is now Djibouti. Abdirisak at the age of 20 joined the pan-Somali pro independence movement SYL and served as a dedicated secretary general. A decade later in 1954, Abdirisak was imprisoned for "illegally" protesting for Somali independence. He was subsequently released six months later.

After Somalia's independence and the immensely popular political party SYL won 74 percent of the parliament seats. Mr. Hussein was chosen to serve as Somali prime minister from around 1964-67. After the communist coup in 1969, Mr.Hussein was once again arrested and imprisoned for four years. In 1974 he was released and within months appointed as the UN ambassador to Somalia and served until the early eighties.

It is important to note that Siad barre was under heavy criticism for soviet alliance by a number of US allied western countries and that releasing political prisoners at this tumultuous time might of been what was needed to gain favor.

Under Somalia's brutal civil war, Mr.Hussein made many attempts to resolve the conflict and was notably selected by the Transitional National government (TNG) in may 2001 to serve as the head of the National Commission for reconciliation and property settlement. This was however opposed by Puntland and months later Mr.Hussein resigned.

Abdirisak Haji Hussein however did not end his political activities. He was a founding member of the cross-clan progressive political party Hiil Qaran and an ardent supporter of a central unitary state in Somalia. You can read one article he wrote on federalism here . Abdirisak Haji Hussien only reiterated what all clear thinking Somalis know. Which is that federalism is an extension of the political conflict that has wrecked the country since the civil war started more than two decades ago. It was his opinion that reconciliation and not federalism was the answer to the crises.

It was recently announced that Abdirisak H. Hussein will be buried in Mogadishu and that Puntland's current president Abdiweli will be attending along with many other officials. At the height of political clan conflicts in Somalia, there will be no doubts that the hyenas in suits will use Mr.Hussein's funeral as a platform to praise themselves and attack their opponents.

It is therefore important to separate the hyenas from the genuine mourners. Let us remember that all these politicians that are supposedly mourning the death of this man are against everything he stands for.

Abdiweli Gaas, an ardent supporter of federalism that is linked to theft and corruption by the 2012 UN monitoring report is not deserving to be at Mr.Hussein's funeral nor the presence of any Somali patriot. Abdiweli Gaas however is not alone in supporting federalism and institutionalizing the 4,5 system nationwide.

Indeed all Somali politicians especially in Mogadishu are guilty of that. Thus when they praise a Nationalist that went against this catastrophic system, we should remember that they are merely paying lip service and that like a pack of hyenas, they are just feasting on a good corpse before it decays.

With that said.

Allah ha u naxariisto Cabdirisaaq Xaaji Xuseen.
